In the World Cup, Denmark will wear shirts manufactured by Hummel that criticize the human rights record of the host nation Qatar. Denmark unveiled a black shirt to honor migrant workers who died during construction work for the finals tournament.
In an Instagram post, Hummel said while we support the Denmark national team, this shouldn’t be confused with support for a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives.
DBU, the Danish football federation, last November made a promise to wear clothing with critical messages at the tournament, which seems to be fulfilled by their new shirt design.
Fifa World Cup rules prohibit political statements on the team uniform, but Denmark’s new shirt designs in all-black, all-red, and all-white appear to comply with Fifa wear policy, with no words or symbols that are explicit statements.
Denmark’s new shirt design includes a national team badge, Hummel logo, and decorative white chevrons that are faded into the shirt color but remain visible.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy SC later disputed Hummel’s claim that the tournament had cost thousands of people their lives.
The SC spokesperson told Reuters that we have engaged in a robust and transparent dialogue with the DBU, which resulted in a better understanding of the challenges faced, the progress made, and the legacy we will deliver beyond 2022.
The SC spokesperson said, We wholeheartedly reject the trivializing of our genuine commitment to protecting the health and safety of the 30,000 workers who built Fifa World Cup stadiums and other tournament projects.
Moreover, an SC spokesperson said, That the same commitment now extends to 150,000 workers across various tournament services and 40,000 workers in the hospitality sector.
To monitor the progress of promised reforms in labor laws in Qatar, Denmark officials have also taken a leading role in a group of European football federations.
