On Tuesday, LAFC and LA Galaxy both teams announced that they will open the 2023 MLS season at the Rose Bowl Stadium on 25 February, which will be the first match of the rivalry to be held at the 90,888-capacity stadium.
If the Rose Bowl Stadium would sell out all the tickets in Pasadena, then the stadium would set an attendance record for an MLS match because the stadium has more than 90k capacity.
LAFC co-president & CBO Larry Freedman said that from the first day, the rivalry had delivered energy and electricity that made incredible moments and memories on the pitch, which has established it among the most engaging in Los Angeles and across MLS.
Moreover, Freedman said, It is only fitting that we are now taking it to one of the most iconic venues in all of the sports.
This match will be the 17th meeting between the LAFC and LA Galaxy. The Galaxy has already won seven and lost four of their previous encounters in the Rose Bowl.
Chris Klien, the LA Galaxy president, said The LA Galaxy is excited to write a new chapter in the storied soccer legacy of Los Angeles as we kick off our 2023 campaign against our rival LAFC at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium.
Moreover, Chris said, in the United States, we have a great history at the most legendary sports venue, and we know this will be a great spectacle for fans as we place one of the most exciting new rivalries in the world on LA’s biggest stage.
The Rose Bowl Stadium had previously hosted Olympic soccer matches in 1984, the 1994 men’s World Cup final, the women’s World Cup final in 1999, and five NFL Super Bowls.
